Mr. Gurdip Singh Narula

Gurdip Singh Narula was born in 1943 in Sheikhupura now in West Pakistan. His father, Gopal Singh Narula, was a successful businessman. He employed 8000 persons, and was one of the first to buy the “Caterpillar” in India, and owned Coal Mines, as well as several factories & one of the largest brick kilns in India. Due to the partition of India, Narula and his family were forced to move to Punjab, India. During his high school years, Gurdip participated in field hockey. His School team was the best team in Ludhiana, a popular city of Punjab. He took pride and honor in learning, Punjabi, his mother-tongue, as well as the ancient Indian language Sanskrit.

In 1968 he obtained a bachelor of Arts degree in political science. After completion of studies, he began working with his father in construction business. Later on he started his own business, known as GEE DEE Construction Co. In 1975, Gurdip migrated to the United States with his wife. With mere $65.00, in 1977, he started Gopal International Inc. Gopal International started importing goods from Italy, Bangkok, and Isreal. In1983, he started New Hampton Realty Inc. In spite of other businesses, Gurdip purchased Italian restaurant in Long Beach in New York. In 1998 he took over a gasoline company Under Tri-Star Gasoline Inc.

From 1977-1985, hew as Treasurer and a Trustee of Sikh Center of New York, in Flushing. From1998-2005, he became Trustee and current Secretary of the THE SIKH FORUM, INC of Glen Cove, Long Island. From 2006 to 2008 he was appointed as a coordinator and liaison with all Sikh Temples in USA. From 2005 to current he has worked with Congressman Joseph Crowley for a local immigration advocacy group. He has actively supported and raised funds for Mr. Crowley’s Congressional campaign. He is an active member of CURE (Community under Relations Equality) immigration committee for minority groups. Currently he is an executive-member of Martin Luther King Society established by Nassau County. He is presently serving as treasurer of Nargis Dutt Memorial Foundation. In 2007 he established East Punjab Sikh Association, where he serves as president of the association. In 2008 he was appointed by City of New York as a member of community board # 4. In 2011 he was appointed by Sikh Cultural Society of NY as a community activist for Sikh civil rights. In 2006 he hosted the Indian festival of Deepavali by Nassau County in Clinton Park, New Hyde Park, N Y. For this he was honored John Kaiman, Supervisor of Nassau County.

In May 2011, he was involved with United Sikh NGO since 2009 as a director and joined as a delegate of Sikh Summit to Meet Members of the House, Member of Senate and government agencies to promote Sikh Civil & Human Rights. In 2012. Sikh Cultural Society NY (Richmond Hill, Queens) appointed him as Community Activist for Sikh Civil Rights. In 2012 , he was a delegate of Democratic Party to attend DNC at North Carolina. He has donated several books on Sikhism to various libraries in Queens, NY to promote awareness of Sikhism. He has also presented books on Sikhism to President Bill Clinton.

Community-service is a passion for Gurdip Singh. His family has always stood by him. He & his wife Upkar Kaur (Associate Director of Nursing/Recruitment, in Queens Hospital Center) have raised their children, encouraging them to remain close to their religious and cultural roots.

They have three children, elder son Prabhjot Singh, daughter Jiwanjot Kaur and younger son Jasjot “Jesse” Singh.

Gurdip Singh Narula believes that America is the “melting pot” for people from all over the world. He takes immense pride that he is an “American”.
